The honor conferred on His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai (may God protect him), and him being named the Cultural Personality of the Year – during a ceremony held at Abu Dhabi Exhibition Centre yesterday to honor winners of the 9th Sheikh Zayed Book Award – is the appreciation of a journey full of major achievements and contributions toward enriching cultural life in its local, Arab and international dimensions.

The words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces (may God protect him), on this occasion expresses the role played by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum toward cultural development in the UAE. His Highness underlined that “the honor for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is an honor and appreciation of his determination and vision through which he has managed, in record time, to create an overall development in which culture plays a leading role. Through his achievements, he has delivered a creative vision that incessantly pursues new challenges and horizons.”

The award is the nation’s recognition of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as a symbol of the UAE who has contributed toward enriching its cultural life and ensuring the nation’s development across all fields. He has worked relentlessly to elevate the stature of the UAE so that it achieves top ranking at regional and global levels. Culture plays an important role in enriching societies intellectually and such a patronage encourages determination to unveil ideas. The cultural initiatives associated with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has had a great impact in this regard and has transcended to encompass Arab and global cultures.

Perhaps one of the most important among initiatives is the Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, which was launched by His Highness at the World Economic Forum, Dead Sea, Jordan, in 2007. As part of this initiative, he instructed a sum of $10 billion to be allocated toward establishing a knowledge hub in the region to enable the Arab youth to acquire knowledge in order to counter the challenges of development.

Another such initiative is the Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding, which was established in 1998 with the objective to familiarize visitors and residents of the UAE with its culture and providing them with the opportunity to integrate into the institutions they work at. It includes a modern outreach program designed to enhance understanding of the UAE society, its customs and traditions and encouraging them to understand its history.

The honor conferred on His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai (may God protect him), coincides with the activities of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. This shows the state of cultural mobility being witnessed in the UAE and underlines the centrality of culture as a major priority for the country as a primary pillar of its overall development. The UAE views knowledge and culture as main components of its overall development vision and the outcome of its model of coexistence and openness to other cultures and civilizations.
