Commemorating Unification of the UAE Armed Forces

  • 7 May 2013

May 6, 1976 is an important occasion for all UAE nationals. This was the day on which the country’s Armed Forces were brought under one central command and a single banner in order to reflect the firm belief of its founding fathers most notably Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (May God bless his soul). For the country’s wise leadership, unity meant power and dignity and the best way to overcome difficulties and challenges so that the UAE becomes a model of development both in the region and internationally.

Since unification, the Armed Forces have become a major symbol of the UAE’s progress. They not only defend the nation’s territories and safeguard its achievements through their sacrifice and loyalty but also play a pivotal role in the UAE wise leadership’s overall development plans. This is being done in accordance with the vision laid down by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) on the 37th anniversary of Armed Forces unification.

His Highness pointed out that power is a vehicle for peace and can be best exercised by maintaining internal security, justice and political as well as social stability besides lending a hand to brotherly and friendly nations. The same vision has been reiterated by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, who noted that a protective shield was required to safeguard the achievements made by the country.

The UAE’s wise leadership is willing to extend categorical support for the Armed Forces by making available to them weapons and equipment and providing adequate training. These facilities prepare the Forces to defend the nation and contribute effectively to the Gulf Cooperation Council security framework besides helping in maintaining global peace and security. One of the examples is the UAE’s remarkable role earning it international recognition and appreciation for taking part in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in various troubled spots and war zones across the world. Its professional role in these domains has showcased the UAE’s culture to other nations.

Unification of the Armed Forces has been a historic decision for the Federation and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has called it the “second most daunting challenge after the creation of the Federation”. The determination, resolve and self-confidence have helped the UAE achieve the nation’s objectives and ensuring that the country takes giant steps toward progress. This has given it an outstanding position at regional and international levels over the years.
