Armed Forces: School of Patriotism

Yesterday, The United Arab Emirates celebrated an occasion cherished by every Emirati citizen—the 31st anniversary of the UAE Armed Forces Unification Day. This is an expression of the deep-rooted belief in the country’s unity, the common destiny of the UAE citizens, and the beginning of a new phase of diligence and planning for the UAE Armed Forces, which are fully capable of preserving the security and integrity of the nation and of protecting its vital interests.

The speeches delivered on the occasion by the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan; the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; and The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan; clearly enunciated the philosophy behind the development of the UAE Armed Forces, which is consistent with the policies of the UAE government, particularly its foreign policy, since the establishment of the State in 1971. The said speeches emphasized important matters, which are considered as guidelines for the UAE Armed Forces since their unification. The first guideline is that the State has adopted the policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, believes in the settlement of disputes in an amicable manner, and provides aid and assistance in just cases within the scope of international legitimacy. The second guideline is that the Armed Forces are considered a comprehensive force by the State covering its economic, social, educational, health, humanitarian and other fields, in addition to being a potent deterrence against attacks on national security. Thirdly, the UAE military strategy is firmly linked to the collective security strategy of the GCC countries, the Arab national security and the international safety and security order.

Within this general philosophy, the UAE has sought to develop its Armed Forces and provided them with all kinds of state-of-the-art weaponry and armament, not for carrying out aggression or occupation but for protecting and maintaining peace, providing assistance to its allies in need, and contributing to the preservation of peace and security at the international level. The UAE Armed Forces have consistently proved their high standards of professionalism on numerous occasions, namely whenever they were entrusted with assisting their brethren, the safeguarding of international peace, or providing assistance in times of crisis or conflict in different regions of the world. The UAE Armed Forces have always been in the eye of the world’s attention and have been the pride and joy of the Emirati and Arab citizens.

The Armed Forces would not have reached their present advanced level without the continuous and unstinted support of the political leadership. The support has been complemented by highly dedicated and indefatigable efforts, training, and development of the Armed Forces, until it became the pride of every Emirati and Arab citizen, the builder of true men and a school of patriotism.
