Active UAE Contribution to Pakistan Development

  • 14 November 2010

The UAE recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for starting an Emirati project to support Pakistan, as part of implementation of the directives of the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This is a manifestation of the active, extended and continuous support the UAE provides to Pakistan at all levels to confront its development goals. According to this project, a comprehensive development plan would be implemented in certain areas of Pakistan at a cost of about $100 million, equivalent to about Dh367 million, aimed at creating job opportunities and a source of income to residents of these areas.

Support for the development of Pakistan is a constant pillar in the UAE's foreign policy, as has been manifest on more than one occasion in the recent past, especially in the aftermath of the country’s devastating flood calamity. The UAE was the first to extend a helping and supportive hand at all levels and was involved in efforts to alleviate the ravages of floods and continues to cooperate with Pakistani government to alleviate the harm caused by floods, whether at the economic or humanitarian levels.

Additionally, the UAE is among the founding states of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (which was in launched in the year 2008), and plays an active role at its conventions in order to maximize benefits for Pakistan, and the challenges it faces in this respect. This role of the UAE has been appreciated and is still being appreciated by Pakistan, both at the government or public levels. The UAE believes there is a close relationship between development and stability. Therefore, it looks at its developmental support for Pakistan as a means to achieve stability in this important country—as regards the security equation in the region and Asia and as part of the global war on terrorism. The UAE believes that the stability of Pakistan is in the regional and international interest, consequently there is need for an active international movement for maximizing efforts to support development in Pakistani territories as it is a positive means to counter forces of extremism and violence that always exploit unstable conditions for spreading their evil ideas and for executing their inhuman plans that cause turmoil in the region.

The UAE is a firm supporter of peace in the world and a force for development and stability in the region. This is confirmed by its policies and initiatives, which seek to constantly support development plans for countries through cooperation with them and by knowing their needs. Perhaps, the UAE-Pakistani cooperation in this regards is a symbol of cooperation between two friendly and considerate states.
