A Model of Good Governance

  • 4 August 2009

It is not surprising that the Newsweek magazine (in its Tuesday edition) chose The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, (may God bless him), among its list of 50 most powerful people in the world for 2009. The President, His Highness is a model commander who is always engaged in resolving issues of the people in the shortest possible time. Under his sagacious and calm foreign policy approach, the UAE has succeeded in establishing an extensive network of strong relations with various countries around the world.

The President is always in touch with his people, and closely interacts with citizens on every occasion. He also holds frequent meetings to listen to their concerns and problems and keenly monitors the performance of the government as well as takes personal interest in the functioning of various ministries and institutions. This is an indubitable characteristic of good governance. He follows an approach wherein people become both the source and the beneficiaries of progress, and where the focus of development is solely aimed at the well-being of the people.

After becoming the President of the UAE in 2004 (having succeeded the Late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan), His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan launched the empowerment stage of development in the UAE in various fields; political, economic, social and cultural. We can already clearly notice its successes in a variety of areas. In the field of politics, the UAE is well on its way to greater popular participation, as is evident from changes in the Federal National Council, which is performing an important legislative and regulatory role that supplements the work of government in the interest of the country. The political development initiated by the State is governed by two basic principles that the President, His Highness, affirms on every occasion. First, political development is guided by the educational, cultural and societal particularities of the State. Second, it is pursued in a gradual and meticulous manner. These two approaches explain the success of the political experience in the UAE, its longevity and development. Economically, the UAE is considered to be one of the strongest in the region. The UAE economy is distinctive in that it is dynamic, cogent and capable of keeping pace with modern developments, and in facing economic crises. Despite the “financial crises” that swept the world in the second half of 2008, the UAE economy and its financial health has remained strong.

The foreign policy pursued by His Highness is balanced, open and cooperative toward all nations of the world. His Highness has succeeded, thanks to his personal qualities, in maintaining strong relations between the UAE and the world. It has developed friendship, cooperation and understanding with the world leaders, its many presidents and kings. In fact, the UAE is presented as one of the foremost countries promoting security and peace at both regional and international levels.

Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa, the UAE has become a successful model of development, not only for countries of the region, but for the whole world. He has not only been able to bestow global prestige to the UAE economy, but has also safeguarded it from the conflicts and tensions through his sagacious foreign policy.  Thirdly, His Highness has been able to project the humanitarian face of the UAE on the international scene, by supporting the poor and the needy, not only from among Arabs and Muslims but from people of every religion, color, and race, which has made the UAE an oasis of safety, security and stability.
