A Martyr in the Path of Truth and Duty
- 5 March 2014
The martyrdom of First Lieutenant Tareq Mohammed Al Sabi Al Shehhi, who was killed on duty on Monday alongside his two Bahraini colleagues in a cowardly terrorist attack, proves that terrorism is a significant threat to the region and thrives on extremism, intolerance and rejection of the process of dialog. First Lieutenant Tareq Mohammed Al Shehhi was part of a mission to support security and stability in Bahrain.
This tragedy has also exposed the agenda of the people who want to hinder the process of development, coexistence and stability in GCC countries, threaten the gains made by them and serve suspicious agendas of people. His Highness Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior made this clear and said that “terrorism is a plague and all its forms and manifestations should be fought everywhere.”
The shedding of blood of brothers against rioters, in the path of upholding truth in Bahrain, and strengthening the Gulf region’s collective security have significant symbolism that remind us of the shared destiny and common challenges facing GCC countries. The scourge of violence and terrorism target everyone without exception and this can only be addressed through a common vision, and consistency of policy and action. The UAE demonstrated keenness to stand against bids to foment trouble in Bahrain in 2011.
This has been the UAE’s constant policy since 1971 and is based on the principle of extending support to brotherly countries facing threat. The Arab world remembers the UAE’s consistent position in such situations. The country’s positions during the October War in 1973 and during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 are its leading examples. The UAE always stands on the side of truth and against injustice and aggression. It always stands for stability, peace and security, not only in the Gulf or Arab region and the Middle East, but in the whole world.
His Highness Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan took upon the task of conveying the news of the martyrdom of First Lieutenant Tareq Mohammed Ahmed Al Shehhi to his family. He ordered a private aircraft to be sent to Bahrain to bring his mortal remains. This shows the appreciation of the UAE’s leadership, under President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), for the people of the nation. The leadership honors the sacrifice of such people, praises their devotion in line of duty and supports the truth not only at home but also abroad.
The blood of the martyr, First Lieutenant Tareq Mohammed Al Sabi Al Shehhi, which was shed in Bahrain, has not and will not go in vain. His sacrifice has increased the determination of the country to fight against the scourge of terrorism, and has strengthened the interdependence among the people of GCC countries. It has brought to the fore a sense of pride and glory in addressing the threats to our nations and the challenges facing the security and future of their children.
