A Great Success for UAE Diplomacy
- 1 July 2009
The success of the UAE in winning its bid for hosting the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters in Abu Dhabi was the result of enormous efforts made by many parties at various levels as part of a highly coordinated and effective campaign over the past months. In this context, the high-level diplomatic campaign led by Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan is a shining manifestation of how UAE charted its course on the matter of hosting IRENA’s headquarters. This performance has had a primary role in deciding matters in favor of the country and bringing international respect to experienced UAE diplomacy that accepted the challenge and jumped into the arena of international competition with confidence and boldness—without hesitation or fear.
The success of the UAE diplomacy in achieving its objectives in the campaign for becoming the seat of IRENA headquarters, despite the intense competition and limited time at its disposal can be attributed to sharp acumen and strong scientific planning that guided its actions. In this context, the first attributes that characterized this campaign and enhanced its efficiency was the UAE’s emphasis on establishing direct contacts and employing the tactics of shuttle diplomacy conducted by the UAE delegates to over 90 countries around the world. This provided a real opportunity for interacting and convincing the voting members on the UAE’s case. The second point that characterized the UAE’s diplomatic campaign was the high level of efficiency and professionalism in expressing the position of the country with the aid of a large number of statistical and empirical information that substantiated the UAE’s keen interest on the subject of renewable energy and the support that it would provide to the IRENA. In this regard, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was able to present the country’s case very convincingly on his foreign visits that secured the desired support during the voting held at Sharm El-Sheikh. The third point is that in spite the limited time at its disposal, the UAE diplomacy was able to formulate a plan of action that covered campaigning around the world. A large number of countries were visited in a short time which shows a major achievement for the UAE’s foreign diplomacy, which underscores the intensity of the will to accept the challenge and the deep patriotic fervor of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who worked incessantly and indefatigably until the last moment to secure this valuable national achievement.
Undoubtedly, the success of the UAE’s diplomacy reached a high acme in its history, and became a source of pride for coming generations, which is only a translation of all that preceded it as well as the elements of global influence of the country. It is also a manifestation of the wise policies of the President, H.H Sheikh Khalifah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, (may Allah protect him). This also reflects the confidence of the world in the UAE, its sincerity and the great capabilities and potential that it possesses.
The UAE’s success in becoming the seat of the IRENA’s headquarters has opened the eyes of the world to Abu Dhabi and raised it to the level of major international capitals. It will remain a source of inspiration for all the children of the UAE for making efforts in the service of their homeland and for raising its stature.
