A Deserved Recognition for the ‘Mother of the Nation’

'Mother of the Nation' Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Nahyan, Chairwoman of General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairperson of Family Development Foundation and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, is a unique Arab woman whose contributions at the regional and international levels extend to women, child and youth empowerment, humanitarian initiatives, global peace, inter-cultural dialog and development-related issues. Such a vast array of initiatives have made Her Highness a prominent global figure dedicated to the cause of peace, stability and development and her efforts are highly appreciated and recognized by reputed organizations including the United Nations.

It was due to these factors that the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) recently launched Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Lectureship to recognize her distinguished role in world peace, refugee issues (particularly women) and victims of disasters and crises across the world irrespective of color, race or faith. The United Nations has lauded the efforts made by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak on several occasions and has also honored Her Highness on International Women’s Day in 2011 for her vision and understanding of the developments taking place today.

The over 500 medals and awards given to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak by local, regional and international organizations since 1973 are the result of a long and arduous journey of determination and perseverance that has helped her overcome obstacles and solve problems. These efforts have been aimed at achieving national goals, giving women their deserved position in society, presenting a positive image of the Arab woman across the whole world and empowering them to face challenges. An honor for Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak is an honor for the women of the UAE, Arab countries and the rest of the world.

The significance of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak’s vision lies in the fact that it supports women and ensures their contribution to development programs alongside men irrespective of the cultural or religious values.
