President of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian Federation

Vitaly Naumkin is President of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), of which he is a full member. Mr. Naumkin is also Professor and Chair of the Global Politics faculty at Moscow State University, in addition to his role as Editor-in-Chief of RAS’ journal, Vostok-ORIENS. He is Vice President of the Russian Council for Foreign Affairs, and has served as Senior Political Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria since 2016.

Highlights from a distinguished academic career include roles as visiting professor at the American University in Cairo in 1991, and the University of California, Berkeley in 2003. He has also been Consultant Editor for the University of Oxford’s Journal of Islamic Studies. Mr. Naumkin graduated with distinction from Moscow State University, where he also earned his PhD in 1972, and has since contributed to more than 600 articles and publications on a range of topics on the history of Asia, the Arab world and international relations.

A Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Alliance of Civilizations, Mr. Naumkin is also a Member of the Academic Council for the Security Council of Russia, and serves on the Russian Foreign Ministry Academic Council. Honors conferred on Mr. Naumkin include the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
