Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the United Arab Emirates

His Excellency Mr. Afzaal Mahmood became Ambassador of Pakistan to the United Arab Emirates in January 2021, after serving as Ambassador of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Bahrain since August 2018.
Having begun his career as a Pakistan Air Force officer, H.E. Mahmood then entered his country’s foreign service. Previous roles during a long career representing Pakistan on the international stage include Consul General in Houston, United States from 2013-2016 and Deputy High Commissioner of Pakistan in Bangladesh from 2009-2013.
H.E. Mahmood also represented Pakistan at the United Nations Environment Programme and United Nations Human Settlements Programme in Nairobi, Kenya, while serving as Deputy Permanent Representative from 2004-2007. He also served at Pakistan’s missions in Canada (2001-2004) and Indonesia (1994-1998).
He has represented his country at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and at climate change meetings in Indonesia, East Africa, Bangladesh and Germany.
During tenures at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad, after returning from assignment in Houston in 2016, a variety of assignments included Director General for Americas and Europe, and Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Director for Iran-Turkey, Europe and South Asia.
His Excellency graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Government Post Graduate College, Chakwal, Pakistan, and studied Turkish at Ankara University. The Ambassador speaks Turkish and Indonesian, in addition to Urdu, English and Punjabi.
