Zayed: Identity of People and Nation, a Theoretical Foundation of a Deep-rooted Legacy

  • 25 November 2019

Throughout history, heroes and inspiring leaders have ignited the torch of pride, dignity and progress, as members of society gathered around them. Their impact remains, thanks to the everlasting achievements, values and principles they left behind. It has now become imperative, in light of the complex challenges that threaten societies and the nation state, to examine all areas of mutual interest capable of enhancing national cohesion. In this context, identity appears to be capable of forming the most important scientific framework to ensure the continuity of societies. Its significance for the individual stems from the fact that identity defines not only ourselves, but
our fate.  For wider society, it manifests when members of society adopt behaviors derived from principles and values of shared identity. As for the state, it is essentially founded upon a preexisting or newly established identity.

The lecture answers the following questions: What are the concepts of identity? How can we comprehend the importance of identity and its role in society? Does the strength of society rely on the individual, society or state? Can identity be created? How can history and charismatic leaders play a role in creating a new identity for society? Why should we look at the character
of Sheikh Zayed and his great legacy within the framework of identity? What factors lead us to acknowledge that Sheikh Zayed represents an identity for Emirati people and for the UAE? Can a new UAE identity be created based on the character of Sheikh Zayed? What are the principles and values we can derive from his identity? How can we make the most of this identity, in order
to explain the full dimension and depth of the concept that underpins the phrase ‘Zayed’s sons’, in order to ensure its future impact on many generations to come?
