The Use of Rhetoric in Iranian Media Strategy

  • 1 February 2017

Media is one of the many important instruments governments and regimes rely on to implement their domestic and foreign policies. When forming strategic plans, governments use the media as an important tool to achieve their goals. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to the development of strategic plans within the media.

By applying this logic to the Iranian regime’s media strategy, observers of Iran’s media outlets can clearly see that it uses them to convey its messages, at both national and international levels. The use of language, specifically carefully chosen words and phrases, is an effective tool that serves its strategy and contributes significantly to the overall agenda of the Iranian regime.

Given the importance of this issue, and its effects beyond Iranian borders, this lecture explores the concepts, content and goals of this media strategy. The speaker will then highlight specifics of the Iranian regime’s media strategy, providing a number of examples to demonstrate how language and images are used to achieve its goals.
