The Mirage: Enlightened Thought in Countering Terrorism

Symposium 38

  • 19 May 2015

The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) is dedicated to the academic investigation, research and analysis of contemporary political, economic and social developments pertinent to the United Arab Emirates, the Arabian Gulf and the wider Arab world. Moreover, the ECSSR explores the means and mechanisms to respond to such developments and issues, both in terms of effectively countering the challenges they pose and capitalizing on the opportunities they present.

This symposium, entitled “The Mirage: Enlightened Thought in Countering Terrorism,” tackles one of the most pressing and perilous issues of concern to the Arab and Muslim worlds—political Islam and the forces and groups that represent it, including their practices, modi operandi, attitudes and experiences inside and outside government, as well as the threat they pose both to the security, stability and unity of the states and societies they inhabit, as well as to global security in general.

This symposium tackles important issues that address various dimensions of the phenomenon of political Islam and political religious groups, based on a profound reading of The Mirage, the latest book by H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research, by intellectuals and specialized experts from within the United Arab Emirates and abroad.

His Eminence Sheikh Waseem Yousef, Preacher and Imam of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, will discuss the political dilemma faced by Islamists, whilst Dr. Abdel-Haq Azzouzi, a Moroccan academic, scholar and professor of international relations and political science, will explore the future of political religious groups and draw a number of conclusions from The Mirage.

Dr. Ammar Ali Hasan, an Egyptian political sociology writer, will discuss how enlightenment might be achieved that would defend against terrorism, and Majed Bin Weqaish, a legal and political researcher from the UAE, will discuss myths and realities regarding Islam.
