Sheikh Zayed and the Political Dimension of Tolerance

  • 24 July 2019

The lecture presents an overview of twenty years of Sheikh Zayed’s rule, his accomplishments with the tribes, the irrigation system he created, the establishment of successful border arrangements and his reconciliation of family feuds. The lecture gives an account of the political dimension of tolerance within the approach of the late Sheikh Zayed. At the local level, in the 1950’s, he drew the borders with the Emirate of Sharjah and with the Sultanate of Oman as governor of Al Ain and representative of the ruler in the Eastern Province; he ended the dispute over the reefs with Dubai in 1968 and oversaw border arrangements between some of the Emirates. At Arab and international levels, Sheikh Zayed (may God rest his soul in peace) worked to resolve disputes between countries and would either mediate or intervene at their request. In fact, he mediated more than once between leaders of Arab countries, as well as in an African conflict, and his efforts were rewarded with the reconciliation and peace he sought.
