Labor Markets and Policy in the GCC: Micro Diagnostics and Macro Profiles

Labor Markets and Policy in the GCC: Micro Diagnostics and Macro Profiles

  • 31 May 1997

This lecture analyzed the structure of labor markets in
the GCC states based on an investigation of economic
data from the Sultanate of Oman, a member of the
GCC. The speaker applied a group of Poisson models
to a sample derived from the 1993 census in Oman in
order to assess the micro-forces that support macroprofiles
and policy drivers.
The lecture critically analyzed the consistency of
demographic and labor market policies in achieving
the main long-term development objective, namely the
nationalizing of domestic labor markets. The lecture
also discussed the required policy reforms in the
context of drawing up a public budget.
