This lecture identified two periods in Iranian foreign policy after the revolution of 1979: that which preceded the 1988 cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War, and the era that followed until mid–1990s. These two distinct periods, which represent varying orientations and learning curves in the development of Iranian foreign policy, were explored and highlighted. Dr. Sariolghalam also introduced four concepts that are fundamental for understanding Iranian foreign policy: authenticity, accumulative historical negativism, ideological egalitarianism, and revolutionary idealism. He focused on the strong relationship between the internal conditions and the conduct of foreign policy in Iran, suggesting that each is a continuation of the other.
