In order to focus on current issues in the area of
international economics, the speaker focused on the
General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) as an
institution. He first provided an overview of how GATT
came into existence and then elaborated on the objectives
underpinning the current moves to expand and liberalize
the current international trade system.
Also discussed were issues in the elimination of
discrimination in international trade, basic principles
and important GATT rules and the latest developments
in multilateral trade negotiations.
