Remarks on OPEC’s Strategy of Reducing Prices

Remarks on OPEC’s Strategy of Reducing Prices

  • 7 February 1995

Dr. Thomas Stauffer tackled key issues in relation to
oil market prices and the strategy for determining and
evaluating these prices, and the main factors within
OPEC influencing future directions of oil prices. He
limited his lecture to the period 1980—
1986, which
witnessed lower production in OPEC, with much
talk about competitors and energy alternatives.
Dr. Stauffer analyzed production cost structures
in OPEC and non-OPEC countries, reviewed the
positive aspects of cost versus price formula, looked
at the tendencies toward energy conservation, and
discussed the imbalance of natural gas production.
