The Future of Afghanistan and its Relations with Iran

The birth of the Taliban in Afghanistan is among the most significant political events of the last decade in southwest Asia, and poses a challenge to international and regional politics.

The Taliban phenomenon emerged in a particular domestic and regional context. Having won the allegiance of local leaders, the Taliban dominates 80-90% of Afghanistan’s territory. Iran remains a player in the battle of gaining influence in Afghanistan through the Afghan Unity Party, by offering military aid to the Northern Alliance. However, the most important factor is that the Taliban and Iran — though they were on the brink of war in August 1998 — eschew escalation and confrontation.
