The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) organized a lecture entitled ‘The Future of Collective Arab Action’, delivered by H.E. Dr. Nabil Elaraby, Secretary General, League of Arab States. The lecture was delivered on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 7.30pm in the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Hall at the ECSSR Office Complex in Abu Dhabi.
During his lecture, Dr. Nabil Elaraby discussed various pressing Arab issues and stressed the need for collective action to tackle the challenges facing the Arab world. He pointed out that a plan drawn up by the Arab League to develop its mechanism will be presented during the next Arab Summit.
Dr. Elaraby emphasized that the Palestinian issue will always remain an Arab cause. He said that continued Israeli occupation has implications at various levels and this is a challenge for the international law because all the people, except the Palestinians, have gained independence.
Dr. Nabil Elaraby said that four factors should be taken into account while making efforts to resolve the conflict in Syria. First, the solution must be political and not military. Second, Security Council should stop fighting in the country as soon as possible. Third, efforts must be made to alleviate the suffering of over six million people displaced inside Syria. Fourth, we must think about the reconstruction of the country after all this devastation.
