Zayed and the Environment

Zayed and the Environment

  • 23 May 2018

This lecture explores the most important achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God rest his soul in peace) with regard to the environment, namely his success in triggering the green miracle and transforming the desert into green gardens. He was the first state president to whom the United Nations Organization and whole world paid tribute to for the green epic he accomplished. In this, he succeeded where the experts and agriculturalists had failed. The late Sheikh Zayed (may God rest his soul in peace) cultivated the desert and, with God’s blessings, turned the lands of Abu Dhabi and the UAE into date palm forests with an estimated 60 million palm trees. This has made the UAE one of the world’s top 10 countries in exporting high-quality dates.

The lecture also discusses the laws and legislation on the protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife enacted by the late Sheikh Zayed (may God rest his soul in peace) in the early 1970s. The lecture points to the more than 25 international and regional awards that the late Sheikh Zayed received from different United Nations bodies, international institutions, universities, and countries in recognition of his key role in protecting and preserving the environment and wildlife, and building nature reserves such as Sir Bani Yas Island, Bu Tinah, and Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.

Finally, the lecture sheds light on the international award that the late Sheikh Zayed (may God rest his soul in peace) received posthumously in 2005, the “Champion of the Earth Award,” which has been presented to only seven other champions worldwide. His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE (may God protect him), collected the award from a United Nations representative.
