The US and Iran: Analyzing the Structural Impediments to Rapprochement

Dr. Snyder analyzed the enmity existing between the
US and Iran for almost twenty-five years, and raised the
query regarding any possibilities for reconciliation. He
considered that the comprehensive answer lies within
the analysis of the structural factors. As stated in his
book, The US and Third World Revolutionary States:
Understanding the Breakdown in Relations, the collapse
of relations is attributable to both revolutionary domestic
policies pursued by Iran and the rigid containment
policy the US follows. The speaker concluded that
the solution is that Iran should pursue more liberal
domestic policies detached from theocracy, while the
US should ease its containment policies and abandon its
view of Iran as an “evil state.”
