The balance of power in the Gulf region is undergoing a constant barrage of crucial changes. Such recent developments include: the emergence of six new Muslim states in Central Asia; the international jockeying for power in this area; the dispute over Caspian energy and pipeline issues; the diversification of demand for Gulf oil, and unresolved domestic and regional conflicts. Lastly, Iraq and Iran may acquire nuclear capabilities while producing weapons of mass destruction.
