The Israeli political system has absorbed laws and institutions from Ottoman rule and the British Mandate. Equally important were Zionist Institutions based in Europe and their relocation in Palestine. These institutions and political forces continue to influence the Israeli political system.

Dr. Gubser discussed the historical antecedents of the Israeli system; the principal institutions and how they interact with major political forces in the country; and the result of the Israeli elections of 1999 and the reasons for change in leadership.
