Yemen Crisis Developments

Yemen Crisis Developments

  • 17 February 2016

The following lecture will evaluate the series of successive, rapid developments that have recently unfolded in Yemen, spanning from the coup carried out by the Houthi rebels and militias loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh until the present time. The lessons learned from the dramatic events in Yemen and subsequent developments at the local, regional and international level indicate that a clear and transparent vision for the future has been molded; particularly in light of the successful Operation Decisive Storm, Operation Restoring Hope and Operation Golden Arrow campaigns, and in addition to the continuous support offered by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other members of the Arab coalition.

The possibility of a sustainable peaceful solution being reached will also be examined, whereby the importance of civil institutions will be underlined in terms of providing the solid foundations from which to avoid further catastrophic failures that are often tied to the use of violence, the exercise of power and the pursuit of counterproductive objectives. Such action is necessary in order to craft a political future that steers away from the illusions of the past and the absence of a clear vision for the future. At the heart of such an approach are a number of strategic steps that can be taken and which together collectively representthe building blocks that will enable the promotion and restoration of security and stability, reconstruction and development.

Aden is an important springboard from which to launch attempts to find a workable solution. A variety of practical measures will have to be adopted and a civil state will need to be constructed in view of addressing some of the following unresolved issues: the so-called Southern issue; the need to eliminate factors that fuel terrorism; and drafting a development plan that maximizes Yemen’s capabilities. Moreover, the anticipated impact of ongoing and concerted international efforts aiming to bring about an end to the Yemeni crisis in the near future also needs to be considered.
