The Future of Arab–African Relations: Opportunities and Challenges

Professor Edward Maloka has served as the Special Advisor to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa since 2009 and is currently South Africa’s Special Representative to the Great Lakes Region and Adjunct Professor at the University of Witwatersrand’s School of Governance, Public and Development Management.

Previously, Prof. Maloka was Special Advisor to the Deputy President of South Africa, Advisor for the NEPAD Secretariat on Governance, Public Administration and Post-Conflict Reconstruction, and an African Legacy Delegate for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee.

He served for four years as the Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) and was a Lecturer at the University of Cape Town. Previously, he was adviser to the Premiers of the Mpumalanga and Gauteng Provincial Governments. Between 1992 and 1995 he worked as a Mellon Research Fellow at Cape Town University.

Prof. Maloka is concerned with political and developmental issues in Africa, including the history of the liberation struggle in South Africa, and has written a weekly column for the Sowetan newspaper. He has delivered lectures at the world’s premier universities including Oxford and Princeton, and has been Vice-president for Southern Africa of the Association of African Political Science and President of the South African Association of Political Studies.

Professor Maloka holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rhodes University, a Masters in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Geneva, a Ph.D. in History from the University of Cape Town and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from Princeton University.

The lecture was delivered at 7pm in the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Hall at the ECSSR office complex in Abu Dhabi.
