US Foreign Policy Following the 2000 Election

US Foreign Policy Following the 2000 Election

  • 12 November 2000

Dr. Gubser explained that the US elections of 2000 focused on domestic issues. This presentation, held before the declaration of results, discussed possible trends in US foreign policy. Would the US subjugate economic interests to foreign policy considerations? What would relations be with other powers? Would the US respect prior agreements or work unilaterally? Would defense expenditure continue to fall? How would the US deal with the energy issue? What would US policies be with regard to Iraq, Iran, energy supply and price fluctuations? Dr. Gubser concluded that though radical policy changes were rare, the president enjoys great powers and could change US foreign policy.
