Current issues and key developments in the Middle East were presented from a US standpoint: the uncertain institution in Iraq; the popular mandate won by President Khatami's reformist faction and Iran and its implications; and perils that beset the Arab-Israeli peace negotiations. Attention was focused on global economic issues affecting the Middle East. US presidential candidates and their differing stands on the Middle East were presented.
