The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) organized a lecture – The Challenges of Globalization and the Need for Solidarity – delivered by President Lech Walesa, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Former President of the Republic of Poland, on Sunday (March 9, 2014). The lecture was attended by His Excellency Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the ECSSR, and a large gathering including diplomats, people with interest in political affairs and international relations and members of the media.

During his lecture, President Lech Wałęsa described the UAE as a model nation and said that the country is “based on values and not just money”. He said that the UAE’s leadership has built a beautiful and modern state in the middle of the desert, which preserves spiritual and social values. Wałęsa also noted the importance of security and stability of the UAE under the country’s wise leadership.

In his lecture, Wałęsa expressed his country’s keenness to develop relations with the UAE, especially in the field of education. He highlighted the need to build values of solidarity in the process of globalization. He called for environment conservation, and urged equitable distribution of wealth across the universe. Wałęsa noted that the United Nations General Assembly has identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should define international relations in the 21st century.

Wałęsa noted that protests have taken place in Europe against capitalism and said that the problem of unemployment must be resolved if capitalism has to survive in the future. According to President Lech Wałęsa, globalization poses new challenges to the world and it must be limited to areas that benefit human beings so that the larger objectives of equality and equitable distribution of wealth are achieved.
