A Reading of “Women and Development”

  • 9 October 2019

The lecture presents a review of Women and Development by H.E. Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR). The lecturer sheds light on His Excellency’s motivations for publishing the book, which include; regressive religious perspectives propagated by radical preachers; education systems that still stress the traditional role of women; and, the impact of traditional culture and Arab education on women’s development. In a review of the book’s four chapters, the lecture discusses the educational system, the job market for Gulf women, and particularly, the impact of religion, customs and traditions on women’s participation in the workforce. The lecture also explores the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s (may God rest his soul in peace) vision for women. It looks at the factors that shaped his thought and saw him adopt policies and programs that have enhanced the role of Emirati women. Sheikh Zayed established a remarkable and substantial value system that has changed the perception of UAE women, who are now role models for Gulf and Arab women. The lecture also explores the many features that distinguish this book from other publications that explore the issue of women and development.
