  • 17 September 2013

The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies & Research's Fourth Annual Education Conference, held under the patronage of H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was launched today with H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, delivering the opening keynote address. The conference is one of the UAE's leading education conferences that promises to deliver a thought-provoking 2-day programme of discussions led by world-class academics to the audiences in attendance.

The Fourth Annual Education Conference will champion key local issues of Educational Innovation – addressing how the nation can cultivate innovation and creative thinking in its students; Knowledge Production – initialising discussions on how to nurture confident students and research institutes to create new knowledge, rather than consuming learning and ideas; and finally Internationalisation – where academics will delve into balancing the preservation of national culture with the need to create internationally competitive institutions and graduates. These will be done through a series of expert panels, student seminars and critical debate.

"We give thanks to Allah that here in the United Arab Emirates we enjoy the fruits of the movement of renaissance and complete development which has been led wisely in all parts of the country by our father His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, may God protect him. We are all in agreement that a successful society, in this era of knowledge, technology and innovation, is one that is founded upon committed citizens, capable of analysis and discovery, creativity and initiative." said H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development.

"The ECSSR has hosted 3 successful Annual Conferences and we are proud to present the fourth one taking the cause of the importance of Education in the region forward," said Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General, The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR). "We have invited speakers from around the world who are leaders in their domain knowledge and we hope that their research and knowledge will help develop the framework of education that will fuel UAE's creative future. This conference, we believe, will provide a clear and useful set of recommendations for future education policy through aligning the latest international theoretical perspectives on educational reform with the practical realities of the UAE's current education system."

The line-up at the Fourth Annual Education Conference will feature leading academics including Prof. Dr. Taisir Subhi Yamin, Dr. Howard Alper and Philip Altbach. Alongside these International speakers will be the local experts represented by Suleiman Al Jassim and Arif Sultan Al Hammadi among other eminent personalities.

The ECSSR is the UAE's leading research centre for education and has been hosting the Annual Education conference for three successful years, covering topics such as the strategies and policies of education in the UAE, the challenges facing school and university education, and quality criteria as represented by educational curricula and education staff in the First Annual Education Conference in 2010. 2011 and the Second Annual Education Conference saw the conference focusing on the respective roles of the state and society in the development of school education systems–the two key foundations upon which the educational process is based. Also, the role of teachers was discussed via an exploration of various issues related to skills development among those employed in the education sector. The most recent and Third Annual Education Conference hosted in 2012 covered topics of discussion including distance education, e-learning for universities, and means to ensure that education is tailored toward satisfying UAE labour market requirements.
