Dr. Jamal Sanad Al Suwaidi Receives Mediterranean Award for Diplomacy 2014

Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Centre of Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), today received the Fondazione Mediterraneo?s Mediterranean Award for Diplomacy 2014 at a ceremony held at the ECSSR Office Complex in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State, senior officials and dignitaries in the scientific, cultural, political and diplomatic fields as well as members of the Fondazione Mediterran took part in the ceremony. The Mediterranean Award, which consists of the Totem of Peace work of art by sculptor Mario Molinari, is awarded to distinguished global personalities who are symbols of dialogue and cooperation among nations.
The Mediterranean Award for Diplomacy is regarded as one of the most important awards in the Euro-Mediterranean area. The winners of this award over the years have included highly acclaimed personalities such as Nobel Prize laureates Shirine Ebadi and Naguib Mahfouz as well as Heads of State and Rulers.
Al Suwaidi said in a welcoming speech that the ECSSR seeks in light of huge support from President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, "to continue discharging its message to draw strategies as advanced countries do." He thanked the Fondazione Mediterran and its President Michele Capasso and members of foundation for conferring on him the Fondazione Mediterraneo award.
Al Suwaidi commended the role of foundation since its inception in 1991 to promote peace, dialogue and honouring of leading personalities, thinkers and researchers who promote culture of peace and dialogue among civilisations. He also thanked the audience for attending the event.
"The culture of honouring leading personalities is important for evaluation of good performers", he said, adding that this value had been established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a legacy being sustained by his President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and followed up by His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and President of the ECSSR.
For his part, President of Fondazione Mediterran, Michele Capasso, paid a rich tribute to Al Suwaidi deeming him a source of cultural and strategic inspiration, adding that making peace requires persons in calibre of Al Suwaidi.
Moroccan Academic and researcher Dr Abdel Haq Azouzi, said the Mediterranean Award for Diplomacy 2014 "is a fruit of perseverance of those who sowed the seeds of civilisations alliance and cultural diversity in the world", commending the role of foundation in this respect.
Established in 1991 in Italy, the Fondazione Mediterraneo promotes peace, dialogue and cooperation among nations. The organisation confers Mediterranean Awards on eminent personalities who have contributed to overcoming conflict, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values. These awards include 'The Mediterranean Award for Diplomacy', 'The Mediterranean Award for Institutions', 'The Mediterranean Award for Civil Society', and 'The Mediterranean Award for Culture'. The award conferred on Dr. Jamal Al-Suwaidi is among the most important international awards.
