The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) took part in the 24th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, which was held under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, from April 30 to May 5, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Sweden was the country guest of honor during the Book Fair this year.
The ECSSR’s participation in the Book Fair comes at a time when the Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary and also when the Center’s number of publications has crossed the 1,000 mark. The ECSSR publications showcased during the Book Fair this year ranged from Arabic refereed books and studies to books that have been translated by the Center from several foreign languages. The Center is always keen to participate in regional and international book fairs to enhance the visibility of the UAE’s role, and that of the Center, in the fields of scholarly research and publications.
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair witnessed a range of ECSSR’s latest publications including books such as The Future of Warfare in the 21st Century, which deals with the changing nature of warfare, new threats to national security and political and civil aspects affecting future wars; and Labor Mobility: An Enabler for Sustainable Development, which examines the issue of labor mobility in the Gulf region and the wide Asian region, and the implications of labor mobility in human development and the communities of the sending and receiving countries. The ECSSR also showcased some books which have been translated into Arabic, such as Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, which has received a wide acclaim when it was released in English, and which offers a clear vision of the requirements for leadership and inspiration.
Among other distinctive publications on display during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair was the new book by His Excellency Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the ECSSR, entitled Prospects for the American Age: Sovereignty and Influence in the New World Order. The book has been received with interest and appreciation by academics, researchers and politicians in the field of humanities, and international relations in particular, across the Gulf, the Arab region and all over the world.
The ECSSR has been taking part in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair since its early years. It has contributed to the success of this annual event and has utilized the opportunity it presents to connect with intellectuals, scholars and book lovers visiting the Book Fair. The ECSSR is always keen to participate in such fairs as they provide a platform for enhancing the value of reading, acquisition of books and promotes cultural activities across the UAE.
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is one of the most important book fairs in the Gulf and Arab region. It is attracting nearly 1,025 exhibitors from 50 countries and more than 500,000 titles are showcased each year. The Book Fair makes Abu Dhabi a hub of academic and cultural activities and provides the best way to reach professionals in the book-publishing industry. The industry itself is rapidly becoming a major platform for trading of Arabic books, and a reference point for booksellers, publishers and distributors in the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf region.
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair has launched a number of new initiatives to encourage the development of a successful publishing industry in the Middle East and North Africa. It conducts a series of seminars and panel discussions to further this process. During this year’s Book Fair, sessions are scheduled to be held to provide insight into the current state of publishing industry in the Arab world and the Middle East, dealing with issues such as the Arabic book market and trading of rights.
