A Delegation from the “Tolerance and Coexistence” Training Program Organized at the ECSSR Visits Places of Worship for Other Religions
- 13 March 2019
A delegation from the Tolerance and Coexistence training program, organized by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), concluded this week its visits to a number of places of worship for other religions. The field visits, which took place from March 10 to 13, 2019, included the Sikh Guru Nanak Temple in Dubai, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Abu Dhabi, and St. Anthony’s Cathedral in Abu Dhabi. The visits come as part of the program’s requirement for field studies.
The members of the delegation exchanged views and ideas with their hosts. They also acknowledged the values of tolerance and coexistence that should prevail among different cultures and religions, all of which are advocated in Islam.
Officials at the three places of worship expressed their great happiness regarding the field visits. They were grateful that the United Arab Emirates has been a symbol of tolerance in the region and in the world. They praised the efforts of the ECSSR in organizing this unique program. They also commended the role of His Excellency Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the ECSSR, in this regard.
These visits were in line with the tolerant teachings of Islam, which guarantees the freedom of worship and rituals of other religions. The visits aimed to promote cultural, social, intellectual, and religious understanding among worshippers so that they respect the differences of the other and consolidate the culture of tolerance and coexistence. This is especially important when it comes to religious tolerance in the United Arab Emirates.
At the local level, these visits highlighted the national efforts to promote and consolidate the values of coexistence in practice—in a country where more than 200 nationalities of different cultures, religions, and races reside.
On the international level, the visits helped promote the UAE as an icon of religious tolerance for the whole world.
The Tolerance and Coexistence training program, organized by the ECSSR, is of great importance because it comes in the context of the nation’s “Year of Tolerance” theme for 2019.
The Year of Tolerance was announced by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. The initiative aims to establish the United Arab Emirates as a global hub for tolerance. It also aims to integrate tolerance into government institutions, through a set of legislations and regulations that focus on strengthening the values of tolerance, dialogue, acceptance of the other, and openness to different cultures.
It is worth mentioning that the ECSSR Tolerance and Coexistence training program focuses on consolidating the culture of tolerance and coexistence, particularly when it comes to respecting the differences of the other.
The program aims to build qualified and capable experts in the field of tolerance and coexistence to serve society. These experts will also serve as ambassadors to strengthen the UAE’s status as a symbol of tolerance in the region and in the world.
The ECSSR Tolerance and Coexistence training program projects the country’s aspirations for the future through giving the participants the skills necessary to advance the culture of tolerance and coexistence as a way of life in the UAE. The program also refines their skills in this regard so that they can apply the appropriate measures that reflect and consolidate the ethical standards in the field of tolerance and coexistence.
