The UAE Federation Library performs three major functions:
1. Managerial Functions
The management staff undertake planning and development tasks necessary to supply the library with materials and equipment and to maintain its collection.
2. Technical Services
The Technical Services Department performs a number of functions that ensure fast and accurate access to information. These services include:
This division acquires various sources of information, including books, documents, maps, dissertations, statistical reports, and other materials. Those responsible for acquisitions attend major local, Arabic and international book fairs in order to purchase the most recent materials in fields of interest to the Center. This is in addition to monitoring any library material of historic value, especially those related to the UAE, the Arab Gulf, or the Middle East in general. Subscriptions to Arabic and foreign periodicals are considered essential sources of supplies, in addition to yearbooks, CD-ROMs and databases.
Cataloguing and Classification
In this field, the library carries out cataloguing and classification services for all sources of information such as books, CDs, electronic books, and maps by using the American Library of Congress classification system, adopting the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition (AACR2.)
The electronic catalogue of the library, including author, titles and subject headings, helps researchers acquire the information they seek in materials available at the library, quickly and efficiently.
3. Public Services
The library extends its services to ECSSR specialists, by providing the following services:
Selected dissemination of information. The information specialist lists, selects and updates all required information regarding a certain subject for ECSSR researchers and library users, at their request.
Guiding researchers to use the available electronic media such as the electronic catalogue and databases available on CD or the Internet.
Providing assistance regarding use of reference books and various directories.
Answering library-related queries.
This is a service to acquaint the ECSSR Director and department heads with information about new books, periodicals and databases that are received in the library. The library continually publishes and records an inventory of electronic research resources for user of center researchers.
The library identifies subjects of interest to Center researchers and library users and prepares bibliographic lists that contain the most important books, references, documents, and periodical articles available at the library.
Lending & Borrowing
ECSSR staff make use of the library's lending services. Researchers from outside the Center may also use such services after getting written permission from the administration.
The Emirates Federation Library provides researches and users with copying services according to the researchers need and the library rules and regulations.
